Beware of Charcoal

Black lemonade, black cafe lattes, black bread...you have seen these floating around online, right?

This is a food trend that can be consumed occasionally, but you need to be aware of the potential issues with charcoal-laced foods. Charcoal is a strong detox agent. This is why it is used in hospitals to help neutralize overdoses and poisons.

If you are taking medication or supplements, the charcoal in these food items could block those items. This includes allergy medicine or even advil. Just be aware of the potential side effect that can occur.

This doesn't mean that you should never try a charcoal latte or something. Just make it an infrequent occurrence. If you are going to make something with charcoal, make any others (who might eat it) aware that there may be issues with any medications.

If you are trying to detox your system, then activated charcoal might be something to consider consuming in limited quantity. A 24-72 hour detox session might feature a charcoal green smoothie in the morning or something like that, but it will also include other items that will also assist with a detox.

Black food items that won't hinder your medications or vitamins:

  • Black Beans

  • Black Rice

  • Squid-Ink Pasta

  • Black Sesame

  • Black Garbanzo Beans

  • Blackberries

  • Black Lentils

  • Black Garlic

  • Black Cocoa Powder

  • Black Pudding (a type of blood sausage)

  • Mission Figs

  • Satsuma Plums

  • Black Radish

  • Black Grapes

  • Black Olives
