Fit Witch 101

For those with roots in any sort of witchcraft or paganism, you may have briefly heard the term “fit witch” floating about when the term “health goth” really got started.  Before we dive in, my disclaimer is that this will not get into heathenry.  That’s its own thing.  Additionally, not all goths are pagans and not all pagans are goths.

Practitioners of the craft (whichever form they follow) can approach fitness from that perspective.  The basis of being a “fit witch” is to use herbalism, stones/crystals, astrology, invocations, self-care, and grounding rituals.

Herbalism

Those familiar with herbalism can fuel their healthy lifestyle by creating energizing or healing smoothies or tonics to assist with their goals.  An energizing tonic of citrus juice, maca powder, Siberian ginseng, ginger, and turmeric could help power you through a workout.  A recovery or healing smoothie of berries, banana, echinacea, chamomile, dandelion, and green tea can help the body with recovery after a workout.

It is best to be well-practiced or to work with someone who is well-versed in herbalism before trying out herbalism on your own.

Stones & Crystals

Stones and crystals can be kept in a gym bag or, if not water soluble and/or toxic, in an infusion water bottle to harness the qualities of the stones and crystals.  If you are interested in creating crystal-infused water, you can use an infuser water bottle and well-cleaned stones.  The infuser water bottles are typically plastic like other water bottles, but have an infuser basket that you can load.  This is a safer option than the expensive mounted-crystal glass water bottles.  The last thing you want when at the gym is to accidentally break your water bottle with a weight.

Beware! Some stones and crystals should NOT be put in water. Below is a SAFE list.

  • Clear Quartz - Clear quartz is a powerful healing stone that can amplify energy, increase thoughts and focus, and promote clarity.

  • Rose Quartz - This is typically a love stone, but it can also help with compassion, peace, emotional healing, and loving yourself.

  • Amethyst - Amethyst is used to sooth, stabilize the mind, to calm, relieve stress, enhance mental clarity and intuition, and promote tranquility.

  • Shungite - Shungite is used to cleanse and detox the body.

  • Obsidian - Obsidian is used to protect from negative energy, while also being a truth enhancer and promoting emotional stability.

  • Red Jasper - Red Jasper is a very sporty stone.  It can help bring endurance, stamina, energy, and inner and outer strength.

  • Citrine - Citrine is a stone for abundance, success, and gratitude.

  • Agate - Agate helps to cleanse and stabilize the aura, enhance mental function, soothes and calms, and eliminates negativity by transforming it into positive energy.

Astrology

For those with the astrology skills, you can plan your gym days around your high and low energy points month to month.  This can be done by hand or by use of an astrology program.  Either way, this has been effective for those with the time to look into their own star charts for answers.

Invocations

Invocations for additional energy, reaching fitness goals, and to assist in overall health are utilized by many fit witches out there. I won't go into details on how to do it at this point since there are so many methods to go about doing it. Dive deep into the books of your craft and you'll find ways to do this. You may have a weekly big ritual with additional small daily rituals. You may find that a short daily ritual is more your style. You may feel that you need a whole coven to assist with your efforts.

Self-Care

Self-care is an excellent way to utilize your craft. If you can really nail things down, you may be able to even turn it into a side business. Self-care can include useful teas, healing chocolates, bath salts or bath tea, face masks, salt or sugar scrubs, lotions, balms, and other tonics or edibles or beauty items. There is a whole market for self-care products and you can find a fairly large amount of books on how to make these items.

Grounding Rituals

Grounding rituals are used to anchor ones self. This can be done through meditation or some sort of connection with the elements (water, earth, ice/snow, air, plants, etc). Grounding can help get rid of negative thoughts and energy, emotional instability, and disassociation. It can help you focus, gain clarity, bring in positive energy, allow yourself to move forward, and to bring you to the present moment. You can perform your grounding ritual during a pre-workout stretch or warm-up, unless you feel the need to do this while being still.
