There is some discrepancy over “health goth” and whether or not it’s just a fad or a new style of goth.
Just a Fad
Those who suggest that it’s just a fad often point to the fact that it was started by some non-goths who basically poked fun at wearing black at the gym. They suggest health goths are posers.
New Style
Those who suggest that it is definitely a new style point to the fact that a few fashion magazines had health goth photoshoots, some major brands created some dark alternative fitness apparel, Adidas has its own “goth” section on its website, and there are definitely goths that fit the health goth style.
Fad turned New Style
Was it a fad that ended up becoming a new style? It happens. You aren't magically "health goth" because you only wear black to the gym. Black is the most common color of activewear. You have to fully embrace the music, the lifestyle, the whole realm of both goth and fitness. It is kind of a weird combo, but it works.
Who does “health goth” appeal to?
Goths who are gym rats mostly. I suppose there are those goths who just want to wear athleisure clothing, but I don’t think I’d really classify them as “health goth” unless they actively pursue a healthy lifestyle.
My view of Health Goth
I’ve been goth for a long time. When I really started hitting the gym hard, I started finding it hard to give two-shits about finding things that fit properly. Maybe my body shape is weird or something, but I already had a tough time finding goth clothes that weren’t ill-fitting. Everything had to be stretchy or super-fitted (like a corset). Gaining muscle just amplified the awkwardness of finding things to wear. And really, where am I going to go all dressed up? We don’t have any nightclubs around here. I’m home, I go to work, I go to the gym, I run my errands, and I take my dogs to the dog park or out to swim.
Health goth has been a way I can express my goth preferences, do my usual things, and reach for my bodybuilding goals on a daily basis. Is it what I'd wear for a an event? No. I'd probably try dressing up a little bit.

Do I consider myself a health goth? Not really. Do I wear an old Type-O Negative "Slow, Deep, and Hard" shirt EVERY squat day? Damn right I do. - Brad in Maine
